In the same way that Spain occupies a peripheral position with respect to Europe, Asturias occupies a peripheral position with respect to Spain. Also the Asturian orography is complex, with high peaks, especially in the southern third of the Principality, and multiple narrow valleys that almost reach the coast. These fundamental geographical facts, completely condition the scheme of the infrastructure networks of Asturias, both internally and in relation to the rest of Spain and Europe.
